Ways To Keep Your Cat Healthy

September 1, 2021

September is Happy, Healthy Cat Month. This is a pretty important topic for us. Fluffy may think of herself as invincible, but she’s actually quite emotional, and is also susceptible to many different illnesses and injuries. Read on as a local Brampton, ON vet offers some advice on keeping your kitty happy and healthy.

Good Food

As the saying says, you are what you eat. You don’t have to break the bank getting Fluffy’s cat food, but you should get your kitty a high-quality brand, one that is appropriate to her age and lifestyle. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes.

Stimulation/Entertainment

We know, cats are very, very good at doing absolutely nothing. However, Fluffy does still need some form of enrichment. Toys, window seats, kitty furniture, and background music can all keep your adorable pet from getting bored. This is especially important during the colder months when your cat may spend more time indoors. For specific tips on maintaining your cat’s well-being during winter, check out our article on How to Keep Your Cat Happy and Healthy in Winter.

Veterinary Care

Keeping Fluffy healthy means staying on top of her veterinary appointments. We recommend that our feline pals be microchipped and spayed or neutered. Your furball will also need to be kept current on her vaccines and parasite control. Regular exams and screenings are crucial, too, as these can reveal medical issues that are just developing.

Ground Her

Fluffy may love outdoor kitty sports like chasing moths and capturing ‘gifts’ for you. However, she’s really better off staying in. The Great Outdoors just poses too many risks! Cars, traffic, weather, and wild animals are just a few of the dangers lurking outside.

Kittyproofing

Cats don’t actually have nine lives. What they do have, however, is a taste for mischief. Take a few simple precautions to make your home safer for your frisky furball, such as putting toxic plants and strings out of paw’s reach.

Playtime

Kitties are super playful, especially when they are young. All of that running and jumping isn’t just fun for Fluffy. It helps keep her fit and healthy. Plus, attacking catnip mice or little ball toys is also good for your pet’s mental and emotional health. Take time to play with your pet!

Love

Fluffy is quite emotional, and she always does best when she feels loved and safe. Pay lots of attention to your kitty! Pet her, talk to her, and just interact with her.
