Hiking With Dogs

May 15, 2021

Do you enjoy hiking? This is definitely the time of year for it! Of course, your canine buddy may be more than happy to accompany you. Dogs love to explore new places and sniff unfamiliar grass. Fido also makes a great hiking buddy. Just be sure to put his safety first. In this article, a Brampton, ON vet discusses hiking with Fido.

Endurance

Before taking Fido on a day-long excursion, build his endurance up with shorter trips. When you do hit the trail, keep a close eye on your pooch, and watch for signs of exhaustion. Dogs sometimes get so involved in exploring that they will drive themselves to exhaustion. Whenever you notice your canine buddy panting, take a quick break and give him some water.

Gear

You’ll need to pack a few things for Fido. Your four-legged buddy will need water, treats, waste bags, a pet first-aid kit, and a spare leash. If he’s strong enough, he may be able to carry some of his own things in a doggy backpack.

Leash

Keep your furry friend leashed at all times. The last thing you want is for Fido to charge off after a squirrel! Retractable leashes can be great, but they can be dangerous in certain situations. Bring an extra leash along. Keep your pup on a short line in terrain that could be dangerous, such as near steep drops or riverbanks.

Ticks

Ticks may be small, but they present some pretty big dangers to both people and pets. When you get home, give Fido a thorough nose-to-tail check, and make sure he hasn’t brought back any hitchhikers.

Trail Buddy

Not all dogs are cut out for vigorous hikes. If Fido is a senior, puppy, small dog, or brachycephalic, and/or if he has any health or mobility issues, he’ll probably need to stick to light trails or just stay home in his doggy bed. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Water

Bring plenty of water with you: you and your furry friend will both need it. Try not to let Fido drink from lakes, ponds, or streams. The water may not be safe!

Cleanup

Always pick up after your canine companion. As the saying says, leave only footprints and memories behind!
