Setting Up Fido’s Doghouse

June 1, 2019

Do you have a yard for your pup to play in? That’s great! Dogs love being able to run and play outdoors, and enjoy some fresh air. While there is no doubt that dogs should live inside, Fido may enjoy having a doghouse, so he can have a little place of his own in the yard. A Brampton, ON vet discusses setting up a doghouse in this article.

Materials

Choose a doghouse that offers good insulation from the weather. Wood is a good bet. Avoid pressure-treated wood, though: the chemicals used in the treatment process are toxic to Fido. Plastic may be appealing, because of its low cost, but it offers little protection from heat and cold.

Size

Bigger is usually better when it comes to pet housing, but doghouses are a definite exception to this rule. Like a crate, the doghouse should be snug and cozy, as opposed to being a doggy mansion. If you aren’t sure how big your canine buddy’s house should be, check with your vet. For more information on caring for larger breeds, you might find our article on Big Dog Care Tips helpful.

Placement

Location, location, location, the old real estate adage, definitely applies here. You want Fido’s outdoor home to be in a spot that is sheltered from the wind. Position it so that the house gets as much sun as possible during the winter. The opening should face away from prevailing winds. In summer, you can move it to a more shaded spot.

Bedding

It may be tempting to put a cozy bed in Fido’s doghouse, but in actuality, this will just attract fleas and rodents. Opt for carpet or matting instead.

Height

We recommend raising Fido’s doghouse off the ground a bit. This will help keep rain and snow out.

Wind Block

In winter, hang thick strips of plastic or carpet in front of the doghouse door to keep the wind out. Of course, when it’s really cold, you should limit Fido’s outdoor time. (Note: if you have a snow dog, like a husky, you may have a hard time getting your furry friend to come in out of the snow, but that’s another topic.)

Décor

Who says you can’t make a doghouse look nice? Add a little deck, or some non-toxic plants. You can also add a cute sign with your pet’s name on it.
