Halloween is just around the corner! This can be a dangerous and stressful holiday for Man’s Best Friend. You’ll want to take a few steps to keep your pooch happy, healthy, and safe over the next few months. A Brampton, ON vet offers advice on spending Halloween with Fido in this article.
Do you have a yard for Fido to chase squirrels around in? Limit his outdoor time around the autumn holiday. Unfortunately, the increased foot traffic also presents an increased danger to pups. While the odds of something happening are slim, it’s best to play it safe.
We know, we know, dogs are adorable in costumes. Man’s Best Friend has been a pirate, avocado, donut, lobster, and a taco, among other things. Just put Fido’s comfort and safety first. First and foremost, don’t make your four-legged buddy dress up if he doesn’t want to. If your pup seems agreeable to costumes, get him one that was made specifically for dogs. These should be comfortable for your pooch, and shouldn’t have things like buttons or beads, which can be choking hazards. Don’t put your furry pal in anything hot, tight, itchy, or flammable. Speaking of traffic, you’ll need to be extra careful at this time of year. It’s starting to get dark pretty early, which means more night walks. Wear boots or shoes with good tread, and put a reflective leash and harness or collar on your canine companion. We also recommend sticking to safe, well-lit areas.
Keep Fido in mind as you put up seasonal decorations. Anything small or sharp could be a choking hazard. Your furry friend could also get in trouble if he tries to eat chocolate or candies, or gets too close to a heater or candle.
Some of our canine buddies see visitors as walking chances for pets, treats, and belly rubs. Others see intruders. However, even the friendliest dog can get uneasy when presented by groups of people in costumes. If you are hosting an event and/or are expecting trick-or-treaters, tire Fido out beforehand with a vigorous walk and play session. If your pooch gets very excitable, put him in his crate or in a quiet back room with food, toys, and treats. If your dog experiences severe anxiety during holidays or around strangers, consider veterinary behavior counseling to help your furry friend cope better with stressful situations.
