Autumn is officially well under way! As with any other season, you’ll want to make some adjustments to your dog’s care routine. Senior dogs will also need some extra TLC at this time of year. For a comprehensive guide on autumn pet care, check out our article on Fido’s Fall To-Do List. In this piece, a Brampton, ON veterinarian offers some specific fall care tips for dogs in their golden years.
Rainy autumn days are great napping weather. Fido will probably spend a good chunk of autumn and winter curled up in his doggy bed. Make sure he has a comfy one! We recommend orthopedic beds for older dog. That extra support will help your four-legged friend sleep comfortably.
Comfort foods, like hearty soups and mac and cheese, go hand in hand with chilly autumn weather. Your dog may also need to eat a bit more as the temperatures drop. Supplements may also help, especially if your pooch suffers from any bone/joint issues. For personalized advice on your senior dog’s nutritional needs during the changing seasons, consider our vet nutrition and weight management service. Ask your vet for recommendation.
Dry winter air can do a number on our skin. Fido’s paws can also get dry and cracked. Use paw balm to protect his feet. You may also want to stock up on pet-safe de-icing agents. These are easier on your canine companion’s paws, and aren’t dangerous if ingested. You can also try putting booties on your furry pal, though not all dogs will go for that.
Fido’s pretty coat will help keep him warm on frigid days. However, the insulating properties of your pup’s fur won’t be as effective if he has tangles or dead fur in his coat. Give your furry best friend a good bath before it gets cold, and brush him regularly.
The days are getting shorter, so keep that in mind when scheduling your pet’s walks. Try to get as many of those strolls in before dark as you can. Make sure that Fido has reflective gear, so people can see him. At home, set out some nightlights to help your canine buddy find his way around at night, especially if you don’t get home from work until after dark.
Speaking of walks, take advantage of that crisp autumn air to take your furry buddy for a long walk. This is a wonderful way to enjoy an autumn afternoon!
