Does your dog know cute tricks like Shake or Gimme Paw? Does Fido put a paw on your leg when he wants your attention, or perhaps senses that you are feeling down? Those furry feet are crucial to your dog’s health and well-being, so be sure to take good care of them! Here, a local Springdale, ON vet discusses doggy paw care.
Don’t let your pup’s nails get too long! Overgrown claws can be very painful for Man’s Best Friend. If Fido’s nails are too long, he may change his stride, which can put a lot of stress on his bones and joints. If you’re uneasy about giving your canine pal a peticure, pick up some clippers with sensors. These make it much easier, as they will indicate just where to cut. Of course, you can also just call us to set up a quick doggy nail trim! For more complex nail issues or if you notice any abnormalities, our veterinary surgery team can provide specialized care to ensure your dog’s paws stay healthy.
Get into the habit of inspecting your canine buddy’s feet regularly. You’ll want to check for swelling, bumps, heat, and, of course, visible injuries. Keep an eye out for ticks as well, as they sometimes latch on to Fido’s toes. If you find a tick, refer to our guide on Removing a Tick From Your Pet for safe removal techniques. You can use antiseptic to treat a light cut, but don’t take chances: contact your vet for anything more than a little nick.
Doggy paw pads are quite sensitive. In winter, Fido can hurt his feet by walking or running on snow, salt, sand, ice, and chemical deicers. Booties are a great way to protect your pet’s feet, though not all of our canine companions enjoy them. If your pooch won’t go for wearing fancy footwear, use paw balm or wax to protect his paws. Be sure to choose pet-safe de-icing agents, and be careful when walking your pup in the snow. Snow can hide dangerous objects, like broken glass. Summer can also be hard on your dog’s paws. Your furry friend can get burns or blisters from running on hot tar or asphalt. Take extra care after your four-legged buddy has been swimming: just like human skin, Fido’s paw pads will be extra delicate when they are wet.
Does Fido hate giving you his feet? Teach your pooch that he’ll get a yummy treat when he gives you his paw. Problem solved!
