6 Things To Teach Your Puppy This Year

January 1, 2022

Happy New Year! Has a new puppy just joined your family? That first year of your canine buddy’s life is a crucial one. Not only will little Fido grow from a bouncy, adorable little ball of fur into an adult dog, he’s also got lots of learning to do. That means training is going to be a big priority for you. Here, a Brampton, ON vet lists some key things to put on your curriculum.

Housebreaking

Housebreaking should start immediately. You may find different takes on whether to use newspapers or puppy pads. However, there’s a lot less disagreement on the most important thing: taking little Fido out frequently. Reward him with treats and praise for doing his business outside.

Basic Obedience

All dogs should know (and obey) simple obedience commands. The most important ones are Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Down and Leave it (or Drop It) are also very helpful. Work on one of these at a time. You may want to start with Sit, as it’s the easiest for most puppies to learn.

Grooming Tolerance

Fido may never love baths, and he probably won’t get anywhere near as excited over paw trims as he will over treats. However, it is important to get your pooch used to being groomed and having his teeth and feet handled now, while he’s young.

Crate Training

Even if you don’t plan to crate Fido at night, it’s a good idea to train him to accept being kenneled. The main thing is making sure he sees his crate as a cozy den, rather than a jail cell. Add bedding and toys to his crate, and give him treats and meals in it.

Petiquette

Obedience training is crucial, but little Fido’s petucation shouldn’t stop there. He also needs to know what is and isn’t allowed. Nip bad habits, like begging, jumping on people, and, well, nipping, in the bud!

You Are Loved

This may be the most important thing on the list. Dogs can form amazingly strong bonds with their humans. Nurture that special friendship by spending lots of quality time with little Fido. It’s also important to keep that tail cute wagging. Toys, treats, belly rubs, and playtime are all on the agenda!
