Weight Management For Dogs

October 1, 2022
October 12th is Pet Obesity Awareness Day! Obesity is a very widespread common among our furry patients. According to some studies, more than half of our canine friends are, well, on the pudgy side. A Brampton, ON vet lists a few things you can do to keep Fido trim and slim in this article.

Portion Control

It probably isn’t a huge surprise to find that overfeeding is a huge part of the reason there are so many obese dogs out there. Even giving your pooch just ten calories too much each day can cause him to pack on extra weight! Use a measuring cup to make sure that you are doling out the right amount of food.

Treat Carefully

Treats are extremely helpful for training and bonding. They’re also just a good way to get Fido’s cute tail going! However, snacks should only make up about 5 to 10 percent of your canine buddy’s daily caloric intake. Choose smaller treats, and offer healthy options, such as carrot sticks.

Food Choices

When it comes to feeding Fido, quality and quantity both matter. Look for foods that contain mostly healthy ingredients, such as meat, fish, or poultry, and safe fruits and veggies. It’s also important to offer your four-legged friend food that is appropriate for his age, weight, health, and lifestyle. A growing puppy will need a lot more calories than a senior dog! Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Playtime

Playing is a great workout for your cute pet! Take time every day to toss a ball or stick for Fido, or play tag with him. This is a great way for your pooch to burn off some calories. If your four-legged buddy is more active than you are, look for games that have him doing all the work while you stay still. Fetch is a good example of this. You can also use automated toys, such as tennis ball launchers.

Walks

Even if Fido has a yard to patrol and chase squirrels around in, he’ll still need at least a daily walk. That exercise really adds up! It’s also a good idea to take your canine companion to new places every now and then. Don’t think of this as a chore: savor the time with your furry friend.
