Taking Your Cat to the Vet

August 1, 2018

August 22nd is Take Your Cat To The Vet Day! We know, given the option, Fluffy would much rather celebrate Hug Your Cat Day or Cat World Domination Day again. However, regardless of their opinions on the matter, kitties are much healthier—and therefore happier—with proper veterinary care. Read on as a Brampton, ON vet discusses taking your cat to the vet.

Fluffy’s Veterinary Care Needs

Just as with people, cats’ healthcare needs change as they age. When your furball is a kitten, she’ll need to visit us a few times, for her initial exams, vaccinations, parasite control, and microchipping. We also strongly advise that cats be fixed before they reach maturity. Adult kitties usually should come in at least once a year, though outdoor cats and pets with health issues will need more frequent appointments. Once your feline buddy reaches her golden years, you’ll want to monitor her health more closely. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Emergency Visits

No matter what age your cat is, you’ll need to keep a close eye out for signs of illness or injury. Hiding is a common one. Other red flags include poor grooming, bad breath, respiratory issues, sudden weight gain or loss, changes in thirst or appetite, and litterbox issues. Vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory issues, and runny/watery eyes are also warning signs, as are limping, fever, and uncharacteristic behavior. Cats often instinctively try to hide the fact that they are sick, so Fluffy may be quite ill by the time you notice anything amiss. Therefore, it’s very important to call your vet as soon as you notice something isn’t right.

Making The Trip

As you may know, most cats aren’t exactly enamored with car rides. (Actually, Fluffy would probably rather take a bath.) To make the trip a little easier on your feline pal, put some comfy bedding in her carrier, crack a window, and keep the radio playing. We also recommend trying to avoid bumps and sudden starts or stops.

Coming Home

Once your furry friend is home again, she’ll immediately breathe a kitty sigh of relief, and probably head for her favorite napping spot. Offer Fluffy a special treat or a new toy to get her motor going again.
